Now if you are a regular reader of my social media channels, you’ll know im all about a good brew. However, I do have a slight sensitivity to caffeine, but even so it’s still nice to try a change! The summer months are here, and although the pimm’s, g&t’s and elderflower fizzy are pretty amazing, it’s sometimes just nice to kick back, watch a movie in a blanket, and have a warm mug of something.
What is Barley Cup?
Barley Cup is made from barley, rye and chicory, and might just surprise you knowing it comes gluten free too! Most people may be aware that barley and rye naturally contain gluten, however, taking the raw ingredients and extracting the liquid so that you have separated the water-soluble products from the non-soluble products, means the gluten will only be found in the non-soluble part of the rye and barley. The liquid is therefore gluten free. This liquid is then dried and used to make the powder that goes into Barley Cup. HURRAH!
How I chose to try it…
Initially, I followed the jar instructions:
Put 2 teaspoons (3g) of BarleyCup into a cup and add hot (not boiling) water(150ml)
Personally, I wasn’t the biggest of fans having it this way. It was nice, but I chose to add milk and a drop of honey – yummy!
My thoughts…
I have to admit, I wasn’t 100% sure before tasting it. The small is actually not too bad, but was something new to the pallet that’s for sure!
Barleycup has a smooth consistency, with a mildly nutty flavour. Weirdly, I honestly thought it represented a similar taste to coffee, but far less powerful! I think if you can’t handle caffeine, or need to try something different to lower your intake, I would definitely give this a try. For me personally I drink it the way mentioned above, but that’s just down to personal taste and preference.
I think I will be trying their foodie recipes next!<3
After a quick google, I found you can purchase it from Holland and Barrett as well as other sites across the net…. Enjoy!:-)
It is available in four varieties : Barleycup Powder, Barleycup Granules, Barleycup Organic and Barleycup with Dandelion.
